Weekly Photo Challenge : Purple : Milo and a flower

28 Jul

The theme for this week’s photo challenge is PURPLE. :D Barney! Today is also the day before the Milo Marathon.

Barney + Milo = Bad memories.

I remembered again the runner wearing purple shorts who tricked us to cheat in the 2009 Milo Marathon finals.

Goodluck runners. Run strong. Run proud. Run true. Don’t ride the bus!

Change topic…

My entry for this week is this gorgeous flower I saw at the Salcedo Market. This is a Purple Passion Vine. Gorgeous! 20120728-142559.jpg

Some interesting purple entries this week:

1. Purple Pod Pole Beans – love the play on purple and red

2. Dusk at Mt Fuji. I chose Kamakura over Mt Fuji now I regret it not visiting. Here it looks majestic and mysterious.

3. Thistle do. It’s tiny, pretty and yeah play on words was witty.

4. Flowers!!!

5. Pinoy purple goodies galore

6. Venice Carnival player

7. Purple rain down under

Weekly Photo Challenge : Inside : Durian

21 Jul

20120721-114052.jpg

In my recent travel to Davao, friends and I ate some durian on the street. This is the first time for me to taste this ewwww smelly fruit and I was pleasantly surprised that it was really delish. Stinky but absolutely delish.

When we passed by the vendors, the smell could easily drive you away. But after one bite, you will be hooked and the smell won’t bother anymore. I do believe that I started to smell like durian also kaya I can’t smell it na. :D

Weekly Photo Challenge : Distorted

3 Mar

20120303-080901.jpg

For the weekly photo challenge, I’d like to share with you Mr Motorcycle Man in Yellow. Picture taken with my camera phone (errr this is my only camera haha). Distortion from the bus motion, windshield and the rain.

I like these 2 because the rain and the windshield made them look more like paintings than photos.

Weekly Photo Challenge : Indulge : Anawangin Cove

26 Feb

Another perfect weekly photo challenge theme, swak and sakto for the photos I took this weekend.

Indulge. After a crazy work week, I took time off and went with friends to Anawangin. It was a perfect place to just sit back, relax and indulge in some down time.

20120226-205645.jpgWhen was the last time you slept under a tree?

20120226-210528.jpgWhen was the last time you looked at the clouds?

20120226-205721.jpgWhen was the last time you walked to check out what’s beyond the river bend?

20120226-205758.jpgWhen was the last time you sat on a river bank and just watched it flow?

20120226-205825.jpgWhen was the last time you climbed a hill?

20120226-210011.jpgWhen was the last time you waited for the sun to kiss the horizon?

20120226-210025.jpgWhen was the last time you saw the stars appearing one by one in the sky?

I haven’t done all these things in a long long time. I indulged.

Weekly Photo Challenge : Down : This Cat’s Eye

18 Feb

20120218-175733.jpg

Down is the last place I usually look when I go out for a run. Not very smart. I’ve had one too many spills because of it. The usual culprit…this little thing known as cat’s eye.

Went for an easy 10km this morning and when I did look down, I saw them and decided to take a picture. I was going to write how this little thing caused 2 bad ankle sprains which derailed my training and running. I was going to do a whiny post pero sakto, it fits the theme for this week’s photo challenge.

So where do I look when I run?

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I look around me, wave and smile at fellow runners. I marvel at glorious views I see. But more often specially when I’m out for a tough workout and when I race, I focus inwards.

I run better when I focus on my form and my candence. I like to count. I count my steps. I go inwards to work at improving my form. I play around with how I land to see what’s the most efficient for faster turnovers and stride length. I test how tight I should keep my abs. I vary my arm swing and visualise how it can help me run faster. Geeky much?

Seeing this cat’s eyes made me realise that I really should look down every so often. I’ve got an eye out now for these little beasties. They won’t get me down again.

Weekend workout 1, done. One more tomorrow. How about you?

Weekly Photo Challenge : Waiting : in Tokyo

12 Dec

Here’s my very late contribution to the Weekly Photo Challenge on Waiting. Three weeks ago, we had our great Tokyo adventure. Preparing for the trip itself involved a lot of waiting. Waited for confirmation of airline booking, hotel reservation and the most dreadful of all the visa application approval.

After almost a month of prep, we were ready to hit Tokyo.

The trip would not have been as easy if Hiro san from Tokyo Free Guide was not just an email away to help me sort out things. So many thing to see, taste and smell…and shop in Japan!

Waiting at the fascinating, confusing but very reliable Tokyo Subway. We spent a lot of time going up and down the subway and waiting for trains that will take us to the wonderful places in tokyo. But the the sights, the sounds, the tastes … all worth the wait!

20111203-082457.jpg

I was just going to post on the weekly theme … but  might as well do a post on trip.

Let’s start with my favorite part of the trip first. I loved our trip to Kamakura. It is one hour out of Tokyo via the JR Shonan line. For an extra Y20, we were able to go inside and check out the structure from the inside. Amazing design even from the inside. It’s worth the going up and down a narrow, cramped and dark set of stairs. And Kamakura! It was just bustling with activity. It is fascinating to note that most of the tourists are local tourists. They travel far and wide to visit the shrines and the temples. And I think for a spot of shopping too. :o ) Just like near some of our churches, the street to the shrines and temples are lined with shops selling lots of stuff.

Another day, another time, another train …  we were waiting in one of the pedestrian crossing lanes at the famous Shibuya crossing. Japanese Lifestyle described it as a “scramble crossing as the traffic is stopped in all directions, thus allowing pedestrians to walk in all directions through the intersection.” It was not as crazy as I imagined it would be. But then again, I am a Pinoy commuter and pedestrian lanes in Manila … oh well, bus, taxi, cars and motorbikes would say, “What pedestrian crossing?”

A few steps from the Shibuya crossing, we found  Hachikō’s statue and paw prints. Hachikō knows all about waiting. “He is best remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, even many years after his owner’s death. During his owner’s life, Hachikō greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhageand died, never returning to the train station where Hachikō was waiting. Every day for the next nine years the dog waited at Shibuya station. Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. They brought Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait. This continued for nine years with Hachikō appearing precisely when the train was due at the station” – Wikipedia

We were too early for fall! Heartbreak. I was afraid that we would be too late for fall. I was afraid that we will miss the turning of the leaves. Sadness, when we arrived, the leaves haven’t started to turn yet. We were lucky to spot this lone maple tree in Yoyogi park. (Hiro san told me that the leaves started turning last week.)

20111203-082651.jpg

Couldn’t wait and couldn’t have enough of it! Loved the Harajuku area. The outfits, the look, so effortless. It was just too bad that we could not wait for the Fashion Walk. Our trip back to Manila was at 6pm. We just didn’t have enough time.

20111203-082715.jpg

I would love to come back here in again. And the waiting starts all over again …

Weekly Photo Challenge : Breakfast

19 Nov

Whenever I travel, I always try to find where the locals go and eat. I find that it’s a great way to experience a new place.

This is a nasi lemak. It is a typical breakfast in Malaysia. It’s fried rice served with anchovies, egg, cucumber, roasted peanuts and sambal. I saw people ordering milk tea so I added it to my order also.

Pretty much similar to the Pinoy SiLog ( fried rice + egg + a fish or meat dish).

20111119-005648.jpg

I had this one rainy morning in one of the restaurants near the Central Market in KL.

And this filling and yummy delight only cost me MYR3.80 (about Php52 or USD1.20).

Weekly Photo Challenge : Hidden

29 Oct

20111029-083603.jpg

The Philippine tarsier is a shy nocturnal animal that leads a mostly hidden life, asleep during day and only active at night to hunt food. – Wikipedia

They have buggy eyes, well formed hands and very shy (or scared). A tarsier is so small. The one in the photo above is probably as big as my palm only.

We didn’t go into the wild to see them though. In Bohol, they have set-up centers were tourist could interact with the tarsiers.

Flash photography is a no-no. It will hurt their eyes. Me and my trusty iPhone pose no danger to them, but there were some who are a bit careless.

I do feel sad for them. I wish Bohol could set up interaction centers that wont take these fragile creatures away from their natural habitat.

Weekly Photo Challenge : Opportunity

23 Oct

This is one opportunity that I never miss every time I take an overnight flight.

At around 4am in the morning, I always make sure that I am awake and looking out my window. I love watching the sunrise but the sun making its way up and over the horizon is simply spectacular.
